Where quality is visible and where it is not

Most of what makes a piece feel expensive is decided in places nobody photographs. Drawer boxes that are jointed rather than stapled. Doors that close the same way after a thousand openings. An underside finished as carefully as the top so the piece does not move with the seasons. On the visible side it is proportion and edge: the thickness of a top, the radius on a corner, how a leg meets the floor. Those details are cheap to get right in the drawing and impossible to fix once the piece is made.

Weight, stability and the feel of substance

People read weight as quality, and they are often right. A table that does not shift when you lean on it, a sideboard that does not rock on a stone floor, a chair that does not creak — these come from section sizes and joinery chosen for the load rather than for the cheapest cut list. Where a piece needs to be moved often, we do the opposite and keep it as light as the structure allows, because a beautiful piece nobody can lift is a failure of its own kind.

Finishes that age well rather than just photograph well

A high-gloss finish looks extraordinary on the day and shows every fingerprint and fine scratch after. An open-pore oiled timber looks quieter and gets better with handling. Lacquers, oils, hardwax and paint each have a different relationship with time and repair, and in a lived-in room the finish you can maintain is worth more than the one that wins a render. We show finishes on the real material so the choice is made on the actual surface.
