What to send us before anything is drawn

A commission starts with the room, not the furniture. The most useful things you can send are a photo of the space, the wall-to-wall or alcove measurement the piece has to live in, and one reference image of something you like. That is enough to say whether the idea is buildable, what it is likely to be made from, and roughly where it sits on price. Exact drawings come later; asking for them at the start usually means guessing at decisions you have not had to make yet.

How the size is actually decided

Custom does not mean every dimension is free. Seat heights, desk heights and table heights sit inside narrow ranges because bodies do, so those are set first and the rest of the piece is proportioned around them. The dimensions that genuinely move are the ones the room controls: overall length, depth against a wall, clearance in front of a door or a radiator. We work those out against your measurements and flag anything that will be tight before it is cut, not after it arrives.

Choosing materials by how the piece will be used

The right material is the one that survives the life the piece will have. A dining table that sees homework, hot dishes and cleaning spray wants a harder finish than a console in a hallway. A painted finish is easy to touch up; a stained solid timber ages and can be refinished; a veneer gives a matched grain across a wide surface that solid wood cannot.
