Designing for the way children actually use furniture

Children climb anything that can be climbed and pull on anything that can be pulled. Good children's furniture assumes that. Tall storage is fixed to the wall rather than freestanding, drawers have stops so they cannot be pulled out onto a foot, corners are radiused where a head is likely to meet them, and anything a child will stand on is built for an adult's weight. None of that has to look institutional — it is decided in the structure and stays invisible in the finished piece.

Raised beds, bunks and play structures

Raised beds and bunks are covered by federal safety rules on guardrails and on the size of openings a child could slip through, and a bespoke design should be drawn to those rules from the first sketch rather than adjusted afterwards. Ladders and stairs are planned for small feet and for a parent getting up there at night. For play structures and playhouses, the same thinking applies at a larger scale: fixings that cannot loosen, no gaps that trap fingers, and a structure that stays rigid when four children are on it at once.

Finishes, and furniture that grows up

Finishes for children's rooms are chosen for low odour once cured and for being easy to clean and touch up, because they will be scrubbed and scuffed. We also design for the next stage: a desk that takes a taller chair later, a bed that drops its rails, storage that becomes a bookcase. A piece that can change with the child is the best value in the room, and it is far easier to plan that in than to adapt a piece that was not designed for it.

Common questions

Are the finishes safe for a nursery or child's room?
We specify finishes that are low in odour and fully cured before delivery, and we will tell you exactly what is used on each piece so you can check it against your own requirements.
Can you build a custom bunk bed?
Yes. Bunks and raised beds are designed around the federal guardrail and opening requirements from the start, with ladders or stairs sized for the children who will use them.
Should tall children's furniture be anchored?
Yes. Bookcases, wardrobes and dressers in a child's room should be fixed to the wall, and we design the fixing points into the piece so it can be anchored securely into the studs.
Can a piece adapt as my child gets older?
Often, if it is planned at the start: removable rails, adjustable shelving, a desk height that suits a taller chair later. Tell us the age range you want it to cover and we will design for it.
