Out-of-square walls and old floors

Brownstones and older lofts are full of character and almost never square. A built-in banquette in one has to be scribed to walls that lean and floors that slope, or it will show gaps along its length. We measure on site and build the run so it can be fitted to the room, with the back and base taking up the irregularity rather than the visible faces.

Bay windows and curved nooks

A bay window is the classic place for a banquette, and the angles are rarely the textbook 45 degrees. We template the bay and build a banquette that follows it, with a curved or faceted back depending on the room. Done well, the nook becomes the place in the house everyone wants to sit.

Getting it up the stoop

Brownstone stoops, narrow hallways and tight stair turns limit the size of any one piece. Long or curved banquettes are built in sections that pass through the route in, then joined in the room so the finished run reads as one. Measure the narrowest point on the way in, as well as the room.

Restaurants and cafes in narrow storefronts

Independent restaurants and cafes often work in narrow storefronts where the banquette along one wall is the seating plan. That makes the details matter: a back slim enough to give the aisle a few more inches, a seat height that works with cafe tables, and upholstery tough enough for daily service. A wall-mounted back on a separate base can be easier to fit along an uneven party wall, and makes the run simpler to reupholster later without taking it apart.

Common questions

Can you fit a banquette in an old brownstone?
Yes. We measure on site and scribe the banquette to the walls and floor, so it fits a room that is not square.
Can you build a banquette for a bay window?
Yes. We template the actual angles of the bay and build the banquette to follow them, with a curved or faceted back.
Will a banquette fit up a brownstone stair?
We build it in sections that pass through the stair and doorways, then join them in the room.
Do you build for Brooklyn restaurants too?
Yes, for restaurants and cafes as well as homes, with commercial-grade upholstery for daily service.
What is the best banquette for a narrow cafe?
Usually a single run along the long wall with a slim back to save aisle space, upholstered for commercial use and set at the height of your tables.
Can a banquette move with me to a new home?
A built-in banquette is scribed to one room and generally stays with it. If you rent or expect to move, a freestanding banquette in sections is the better choice: it is finished on every visible face, sits on its own base, and can be taken apart and refitted in the next home, with new upholstery if the colour no longer suits.

Plan your piece

The right details make a better brief.

Whether the project starts as a custom furniture quote, a luxury furniture commission, a commercial millwork package, or an FF&E procurement request, the workflow is structured around dimensions, materials, budget, drawings, and delivery.

  • Approximate dimensions and how the piece will be used.
  • Material, finish or upholstery references.
  • Quantity, target date and delivery city or ZIP code.

Shipping is quoted separately based on the product and delivery location.
