Start from what the desk has to hold

A reception desk is a workstation before it is a statement. Before we draw a curve we ask what sits on and under it: how many screens, a card terminal, a printer, a phone system, a cash drawer, product for sale, a bag hook for the person working there all day. Cable routes and ventilation for equipment are planned into the carcass, so the finished desk has no cables spilling down the front and nothing overheating in a closed cupboard.

The accessible counter section

Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, a sales or service counter needs a portion at least 36 inches long that is no higher than 36 inches above the floor, so a customer using a wheelchair can be served across it. Most reception desks are taller than that for the staff side, so the design usually steps down to a lower section at one end. Planned early, that step becomes part of the shape of the desk rather than an obvious add-on.

Cashwraps that keep the queue moving

In retail the cashwrap is where the line forms, so its layout is about flow. Bagging space on the customer side, wrap and packaging storage within reach, a place for the impulse display that does not block the screen, and enough length for two people to work at once on a busy day. We plan the counter around the way your staff actually serve a customer, then shape it to suit the store.

Common questions

Does a reception desk need an ADA-compliant section?
Where it is a counter where the public is served, generally yes: the 2010 ADA Standards call for a section at least 36 inches long and no higher than 36 inches. Your architect or code consultant confirms the requirement for your space; we build the section into the design.
Can the desk include our logo?
Yes. Logos can be routed, inlaid, applied in metal or backlit, and are best planned with the front panel so the lettering and any lighting are built in rather than mounted on afterwards.
How do you handle cables and equipment?
Grommets, cable trays and service voids are designed into the desk around your equipment list, with ventilation where a closed cupboard holds electronics.
Can a large desk fit through a standard door?
We build large desks in sections that join on site, so they pass through doors and corridors and are assembled in place with the joints set where they show least.
Can a reception desk be moved to a new office later?
Yes, if it is designed for it. A desk built in sections with mechanical joints, rather than glued together or fixed into the wall, can be taken apart and moved. If you lease your space or expect to relocate, tell us at enquiry and we will design the desk to come apart cleanly and reassemble without damage to its finish.

Plan your piece

The right details make a better brief.

Whether the project starts as a custom furniture quote, a luxury furniture commission, a commercial millwork package, or an FF&E procurement request, the workflow is structured around dimensions, materials, budget, drawings, and delivery.

  • Approximate dimensions and how the piece will be used.
  • Material, finish or upholstery references.
  • Quantity, target date and delivery city or ZIP code.

Shipping is quoted separately based on the product and delivery location.
