In Brooklyn the hard constraint is rarely the room — it is everything between the truck and the room. Where a piece cannot physically reach the room assembled, it is engineered to arrive in sections and be joined on site with concealed hardware, so the finished piece does not advertise how it got there. This is a design decision made at drawing stage, not a repair improvised on delivery day, and it is one of the main reasons we want the access details before fabrication rather than after.

High ceilings and open plans change what furniture has to do. A piece sized for a conventional room reads as undersized in a loft, and the room usually needs definition more than it needs storage — a tall back, a run of panelling, a built-in that separates a sleeping area from a living one. Those are the pieces worth making bespoke, because they are exactly what cannot be bought off a floor.

- Can you get a large piece up a Brooklyn walk-up?
- Usually, if we know about it early. Tell us the stair width, the turns, the ceiling height on the landings and the door openings at enquiry, and anything that will not make the journey is engineered to arrive in sections and be assembled in the room.
- Does my building need paperwork before delivery?

- How long does a custom piece take?

- Can you match a piece I already own?
- Often, yes. Bring photographs, dimensions and — if you can — the piece itself or an offcut, because matching a finish from a photograph is unreliable. We will be straight about how close a match is realistically achievable before you commit.
- Do you deliver and install, or just build?
- We would rather deliver and install work of any size or complexity. Scribing to a wall that is not plumb and assembling in the room are part of the job, and they are difficult to hand to a third party who has not seen the drawings.
