Behind a cocktail bar the layout is set by the equipment: ice wells, speed rails, sinks, glass washers, refrigeration. Each has a fixed size and needs plumbing, drainage or ventilation. We work from your equipment schedule so the die wall is built around the actual units, with access for the plumber and space for the bartender to work without turning their back on guests.
Surfaces the health code will accept
Food and drink service areas need surfaces that are smooth, non-absorbent and easy to clean. That rules out some materials on the working side of a bar that would be fine on the guest side. We specify the working surfaces for cleaning and keep decorative materials where they will not meet spills and sanitiser.
Bar fronts that last
The front of a bar takes knees, shoes and stool legs every night. Kick plates, protected corners and a hard-wearing front panel keep it looking right after years of service. A footrail at the right height adds comfort and takes some of the wear off the panel itself. Details like these are cheap in the drawing and expensive to retrofit.
Lighting the bar for the evening
A cocktail bar is mostly seen at night, so light is part of its construction. A glow under the counter along the footrail, light washing the front panel and lit shelving behind for bottles each need a power route and access to the drivers. Planned in the drawings, the lighting sits in recesses and channels and can be serviced; added later, it means visible cables and fittings stuck on. We coordinate it with your electrician and lighting designer.

- Do you build around our bar equipment?
- Yes. Send the equipment schedule and cut sheets and we build the die wall and internal layout around them, with access for plumbing and service.
- What surfaces are needed behind a bar?
- Working areas need smooth, non-absorbent, easy-to-clean surfaces. We specify those for the service side and keep decorative materials on the guest side.
- Can you build a back bar display?
- Yes. Back bars with lit shelving for bottles are built to match the front bar.
- How do you protect the bar front?
- With kick plates, protected corners and durable panels, plus a footrail that takes wear off the front.
- Can a bar have built-in lighting?
- Yes. Under-counter, front panel and back bar lighting are planned into the joinery with access to the drivers, and coordinated with your electrician.
- How much bar length does each guest need?
- A common planning figure is about 24 inches of bar per stool, which gives each guest room for elbows, a plate and a drink. Cocktail bars where most guests stand can run denser. We set the stool spacing with you against the length available, the stools you are using and how the bar is actually used through a busy night.
