Veneered panelling is cut in sequence from a single log, and how those leaves are laid side by side decides the look of a wall. Book matching mirrors each leaf against the next for a symmetrical pattern; slip matching repeats the grain in one direction for a more even rhythm. For a large room the leaves are kept in order across every panel so the grain flows around the room. The match is specified, not left to chance.
Panelled libraries and studies
A panelled library or study is millwork at its most demanding: shelving, panelling, mouldings and often a fireplace surround, all needing to align and match. Shelves are sized for books, panels are laid out so joints fall on a rhythm, and the lighting is integrated. We draw the whole room so every element relates to the others.
Approving finishes on the real timber
The same stain looks different on different timber, and even on different flitches of the same species. Finishes are approved on a sample of the actual veneer that will be used, under light similar to the room, so the finished wall matches what was signed off.
Grain direction, and where the joints fall
On a panelled wall the joints between panels are as much a part of the design as the panels themselves. Joints are set on a rhythm that relates to the room, aligned with door heads, window openings or the centre of a fireplace, so the wall looks composed rather than cut to fit. Grain direction is decided at the same time: vertical grain makes a room feel taller, horizontal grain makes it feel wider. Both are settled on the elevation drawings, before any veneer is laid up.

- Laying consecutive veneer leaves as mirror images of each other, giving a symmetrical grain pattern across panels.

- Yes. Shelving, panelling, mouldings and integrated lighting are drawn together so every element aligns.
- How do you approve a finish?
- On a sample of the actual veneer that will be used, so the finished work matches what you approved.

The face is real timber bonded to a stable core that resists the movement solid boards suffer, and the finish can be cleaned, touched up and eventually refinished. The parts to protect are the edges and the areas people touch, which is why those are detailed with solid timber lippings.
